Besides tonifying qi, what is another important function of Shan Yao (dioscorea rhizoma)?

Tonifies Heart blood to calm shen; for irritability and insomnia
Clears heat toxicity; for carbuncles, boils, and sores
Secures Kidney essence; for frequent urination, seminal emission, and vaginal discharge
Clears summerheat; especially for diarrhea and vomiting

We don't really say that Shan Yao "induces astringency", but it does have an action of securing essence to stop Kidney leakage, as in Shen Qi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill).
